{"id":347,"date":"2017-01-28T02:14:21","date_gmt":"2017-01-28T02:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gerdhoeren.me\/WordPress\/?page_id=347"},"modified":"2019-09-17T08:32:04","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T16:32:04","slug":"check-engine-error-p0410","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/gerdhoeren.me\/WordPress\/mercedes-slk-230\/check-engine-error-p0410\/","title":{"rendered":"Check Engine Error P0410"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><big><big>2002 Mercedes SLK 230<\/big><\/big><br \/>\n(R170 Chassis)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>At 40,000 miles, my Check Engine light came on &#8212; sad.\u00a0 The error code was P0410: Secondary Air Injection System Fault.\u00a0 Secondary air warms up the catalytic converter by diverting air from the kompressor.\u00a0 This happens for the first 150 seconds of cold engine operation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>(Other cars have a separate air pump.)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>In my case, it was caused by a defective check valve (002-140-68-60), which was rusted shut.\u00a0 This valve keeps a backfire from reaching upstream to the air valve (002-140-55-60) or other components.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I found a web picture showing the location of this valve on a 1998 SLK, but it&#8217;s in a different place in my 2002 SLK.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"002-140-68-60 check valve\" src=\"http:\/\/gerdhoeren.me\/Discoveries\/002-140-68-60.jpg\" alt=\"002-140-68-60 check valve\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">002-140-68-60 Check Valve. Cause of my P0410 Check Engine Code.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b><big>Replacement<\/big>: It was a nasty problem getting the old valve out.\u00a0 It&#8217;s threaded into a stainless steel pipe and has a 27mm nut on the bottom.\u00a0 The problem is that 40,000 miles of heating and cooling from the exhaust has baked the two components together.\u00a0 What&#8217;s worse, the 27mm nut requires an\u00a0extra thin\u00a0open-end wrench, which I couldn&#8217;t find.\u00a0 I ended up sawing the old valve vertically down to the nut and peeling it apart with vice grips.\u00a0 Then, I could unscrew it with a 1 1\/16 inch socket from the top.\u00a0 Screwing the new valve on was easy.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><big><u>P0410 Again:<\/u><\/big><b>\u00a0I got the P0410 error code again at 65,000 miles.\u00a0 This time, I found the correct (thin) wrench at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.halltool.com\/\">Hall Tool Company<\/a>\u00a0in Portland.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a 1 1\/16 inch Thin Pattern Pump wrench from Armstrong (28-034).\u00a0 It was nice of the guy at the tool company to write &#8220;27&#8221; on it, so that it would feel welcome under the hood of my SLK.\u00a0 This wrench is only 7 inches long, 1\/4 inch thick and fits into this tight spot.\u00a0 I used a pry-bar against the transmission housing to apply enough force to loosen the valve.<\/b><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Armstrong 28-034 27mm wrench\" src=\"http:\/\/gerdhoeren.me\/Discoveries\/IMG_3247.jpg\" alt=\"Armstrong 28-034 27mm wrench\" width=\"640\" height=\"166\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Armstrong 28-034 27mm wrench for removing Mercedes 002-140-68-60 Check Valve<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>After only 25,000 miles, the check value was not rusted shut.\u00a0 I installed the new one, but error code came back after 2000 miles.\u00a0 I removed the intake hose from the air valve (<\/b><b>002-140-55-60), started the engine and noticed that there was almost no air coming out of hose.\u00a0 It was time to take the car to Mercedes.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><strong>The dealer (sadly) started by cleaning out the stainless steel pipe at the exhaust manifold connection (&#8220;moderate carbon build-up&#8221;) and replacing the pre-cat O2 sensor.\u00a0 That didn&#8217;t fix it.\u00a0 On the second try, they replaced the 111-098-00-50 Recirculating Air Flap, which fixed the problem.\u00a0 It&#8217;s located at the air filter housing:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Mercedes 111-098-00-50 Recirculating Air Flap\" src=\"http:\/\/gerdhoeren.me\/Discoveries\/IMG_1752.jpg\" alt=\"Mercedes 111-098-00-50 Recirculating Air Flap\" width=\"450\" height=\"686\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mercedes 111-098-00-50 Recirculating Air Flap &#8211; cause of my P0410 Check Engine Code<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Here is what my old part looks like &#8212; same as the throttle body on the intake manifold.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Mercedes 111-098-00-50 Recirculating Air Flap\" src=\"http:\/\/gerdhoeren.me\/Discoveries\/IMG_1759.jpg\" alt=\"Mercedes 111-098-00-50 Recirculating Air Flap\" width=\"640\" height=\"522\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mercedes 111-098-00-50 Recirculating Air Flap<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>The replacement of this part has fixed the problem. It also restored the full power of my engine.
