I did this climb with Jim Ablao, who is now the owner of\u00a0Chockstone Climbing Guides<\/a>. We started from the bivouac camping area at about 8:00AM.\u00a0\u00a0We crossed Asterix Pass and followed the hiking trail north to the lower west side of Monkey Face.<\/p>\n

\"\"Here is a view of the Monkey Face from the hiking trail.<\/p>\n

\"\"It\u2019s about 9:00AM and I\u2019m looking up the first pitch of the west face from the hiking trail.\u00a0\u00a0Jim has lead (placing gear) and I\u2019m ready to climb.\u00a0\u00a0I had no problems climbing the three pitches to Bohn Street and thought they were generally a 5.7.\u00a0\u00a0But, I notice that several web pages rate this climb as a 5.8.<\/p>\n

I was having so much fun climbing that I forgot to take more pictures.\u00a0\u00a0Here<\/a>\u00a0are some good pictures from someone else\u2019s climb of the West Face Variation.<\/p>\n

Here we are at the base of Bohn Street already.\u00a0 This is my guide, Jim who is now with Chockstone Climbing Guides.<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

\"\"Here I am.\u00a0 Climbing in the shade is good, but not for the pictures.<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

\"AidedGoing up Bohn Street, which is the aided climb to the monkey\u2019s mouth.<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

\"\"It\u2019s a lot of gear to keep straight.\u00a0 I had a blast on this section and didn\u2019t worry about the exposure.<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

\"\"Here I am in the monkey\u2019s mouth and it\u2019s the first time that I thought about the height \u2013 I think it shows.\u00a0 Behind me is the top of Smith Rock, which can be reached by hiking trail.\u00a0 While I was sitting here, I heard: \u201cloco en la cabeza\u201d from a family of hikers.\u00a0 I only had half a year of sixth grade Spanish, but I don\u2019t think they were talking about the rock!<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

\"MonkeyFace<\/a>This is a panorama out of the mouth — manually stitched together. \u00a0 Next time, I\u2019ll remember to put the camera on the\u00a0panorama\u00a0setting (click for larger image).<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

\"Panic<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small>I\u2019m climbing from the mouth up to the nose. It\u2019s a 20\u2019 long 5.7 pitch called Panic Point.\u00a0 The handholds are great, but there\u2019s not much for the feet. The hiking trail is about 180 feet below me.<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small>\u00a0\u00a0Here<\/a>\u00a0<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/b>are some great pictures of this section from someone else’s climb.<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

\"TopIt\u2019s quick and easy to get from the nose up to the top of the head.\u00a0 The picture is curtsey of the camera\u2019s self timer.<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

\"rappelThe rappel down starts from the nose using two 60m ropes.\u00a0 The first part is over \u201cPanic Point\u201d, so we needed to make sure there wasn\u2019t anybody about to climb up, out of the mouth.\u00a0 Jim went down first (and took these pictures).\u00a0 This is me coming down.<\/big><\/big><\/small><\/small><\/p>\n

It\u2019s about 2:00PM in the afternoon and I\u2019ve got a huge smile on my face!<\/p>\n
